Student Stories

Kristy Tomlinson,
Kristy Tomlinson former speech pathologist at Therapy Focus and interprofessional student coordinator at Curtin University

“I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel to India in 2007 as part of the Go Global - Curtin Health program. This was a fantastic cultural, professional and personal experience, which enabled me to learn and develop unique skills and values.

I have worked as a speech pathologist in the disability field and credit my passion and enthusiasm for this field to my experience in India. Go Global was an amazing learning experience for me and there is no doubt what I gained at Anadaniketan (the disability specific orphanage/Go Global host site in India) influenced the job I went to at Therapy Focus when I returned home to Perth. I knew from that point that I wanted to continue advocating for individuals with disabilities. Having the opportunity to see first-hand the incredible benefits of multidisciplinary allied health intervention set me on my career path and gave me a deeper appreciation of the benefits of speech therapy.”

Third-year Student
studying Pharmacy

“It was easy for me to choose pharmacy at Curtin, as it is the only university offering an undergraduate course that leads to registration as a pharmacist in the whole of WA. I know that when I graduate I will often be the first medical professional consulted in relation to a health issue, and if I can make a difference to someone’s life by providing them with information about effective and safe use of medicines, then I think I’m definitely making tomorrow better for people in the community.”

John Marshall
John MarshallFourth-year student
studying Social Work

“In the second semester
of my second year of
social work I went on my first 14-week placement at the government welfare agency Centrelink. What was most rewarding about my placement was the affirmation that social work was what I wanted to do. The reason I chose to study social work was because it helped people at a fundamental level. It was a medium providing the most basic needs for a person to fulfil their human potential, as well as promoting a fairer level of social justice in society. And despite the comfort of airconditioned offices and regular break times, I managed to get a glimpse of what it was really like to make a difference to the lives of clients. That feeling will stay with me forever.”

Food Science and Technology

“Studying at Curtin has given me the opportunity to develop professional competencies in the food system, it has also enabled me to obtain professional experience that has enhanced my career. The course has been designed to ensure that students gain theoretical foundations as well as practical experience to be competent professionals in the food industry. Throughout my studies all the staff and lecturers were supportive.”
